Wendy’s Tips

  • Don’t skip draining the ground beef. Too much grease will make the casserole soggy.
  • Simmer the chili mixture long enough to slightly thicken. This helps the layers hold together better.
  • Arrange the tater tots in a single, even layer so they crisp up nicely.
  • Add the final layer of cheese at the end so it melts perfectly without overbrowning.
  • For a little heat, stir in a pinch of cayenne or add diced jalapeños to the chili mixture.
  • Swap ground beef for ground turkey if you want a lighter version.

FAQ

Do you have questions about this recipe? Here are the answers to the most commonly asked questions.

Can I cook this in a slow cooker instead?

You can cook the chili mixture in the slow cooker, but the tater tots won’t get crispy unless you bake them. For best results, assemble and bake in the oven.

How do I know when it’s done?

The tater tots should be golden brown and crispy on top, and the casserole should be bubbling around the edges.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes! Prepare the chili layer ahead of time, refrigerate it, and assemble with cheese and tater tots just before baking.

Can I add extra toppings?

Absolutely. Sour cream, sliced green onions, jalapeños, or even crushed tortilla chips add great texture and flavor.
