💭 Tips
- I buy my tri tip pre-marinaded. It’s far more tender and juicy. Or you can also season it with steak seasoning, or salt and pepper.
- For a one inch thick steak , cook for 8 – 10 minutes, then check for doneness. I like mine on the rare side, so I take it out at 8 minutes. If you like yours more well done, cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until it reaches the desired doneness.
- If you don’t have an air fryer, you can also cook your tri-tip in a traditional oven. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and cook for 10-12 minutes, or until it reaches the desired doneness.
- A rare steak is typically cooked to an internal temperature of 120-130 degrees, a medium steak is typically cooked to an internal temperature of 145-155 degrees, and a well done steak is typically cooked to an internal temperature of 165-175 degrees.

Sherrie says
Hi, I’m buying my marinated tri-tip from Costco and they’re usually 3 1/2 pounds, how long would I cook that for a medium rare?
Wendy says
I’ve never cooked on that big because my air fryer isn’t big enough for one that size to lay flat. However, I would start with a cook time of 13-15 minutes on each side and then check the temp. It’s rally going to vary based on how thick it is, so my advice is you can also cook it longer, so play it on the lower end side and use a good meat thermometer. Remove it from the air fryer when it’s about 125- 128 degrees. This should give you the perfect medium rare temp of 135 degrees f after it’s rest time.
