My favorite loves dessert but I donโ€™t typically buy bakery treats as I find that they are so pricey compared to making them at home.  Sometimes I just donโ€™t feel like putting in a lot of effort to make my family a dessert and that is where this Crock Pot Apple Dump Cake comes in.  I literally just dump it into the slow cooker and then move on with my day.  You canโ€™t get an easier and budget friendly dessert than that.

What is a Slow Cooker Dump Cake

Slow Cooker Dump Cakes are by far the easier dessert that you will ever make.  All dump cakes follow the came concept and you can make them in a variety of flavors. Essentially a dump cake is a layer of fruit, topped with cake mix, and then topped with butter. It makes a slow cooker apple cobbler style dessert with a slight cake flavor.  Iโ€™ve made chocolate, blueberry, strawberry, peach, pineapple and this delicious apple.  You can use this recipe of mine and substitute the fruit of your choice if you want to change up the flavor profile. 

.Can I use fresh apples instead of canned?

Yes! You can use fresh apples to make this dump cake.  I used the canned apple pie filling because that is what I have on hand.  If you have fresh apples on hand you can whip them up and turn them into fresh apple pie filling.  Here are the ingredients you need to make fresh apple pie filling.  

  • 4 cups apples peeled and sliced
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter

To make apple pie filling with fresh apples simply place all your ingredients but your apples in a saucepan  on medium until it comes to a boil.  Allow to boil for about 1 minute or until your mixture starts to thicken. Add in your sliced apples and stir and then simmer for about 10 minutes until your apples soften. This makes the equivalent of one can of apple pie filling.

Can I use homemade cake mix? 

I have never tried using a homemade cake mix, but I have talked to other readers and family members who have used it often.  I donโ€™t see why it wouldnโ€™t work just as well, so go ahead and make your dump cake with it.  Iโ€™m sure that it will turn out delicious. 

What variations should I try

  • A spice cake mix instead of vanilla for a more flavorful crust
  • Use other types of fruit such a blueberry, cherry, strawberry or peach
  • Substitute with a white cake mix or butter also tastes great

  • 2 cans of apple pie filling
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 2 teaspoons allspice
  • Cinnamon sugar for dusting (optional)

How To Make

Step 1: In a 6-quart crockpot dump the 2 cans of apple pie filling.

Steps 2-3: In a bowl mix together the cake mix, allspice and melted butter.

Step 4: Crumble the cake mix over the apple pie filling.

Step 5: Cover and cook on high for 2 hours.

Serve warm with whipped cream, whipped topping or ice cream.

Cooking Tips

  • Slow Cookers cook at different rates.  I recommend checking your dump cake the first time you make it in an hour and a half. 
  • To keep condensation down you place a paper towel between your lids and slow cooker liner if you find moisture gathering on your cake
  • When serving I like to top with ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce.
  • If you donโ€™t like allspice you can use just cinnamon with no problem.
