How to Make Grinch Popcorn

Line an average size baking sheet with parchment paper. Microwave your popcorn per the package directions. Spread it out on the prepared baking sheet.
Place the candy melts in a small microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 2 minutes or until smooth and creamy when stirred. Pause to stir every 30 seconds during the cooking process.
Add the coconut oil to the melted chocolate and stir until fully combined. Place the chocolate in a frosting bag and cut a small tip off of it.
Drizzle the chocolate over the popcorn until every piece has a bit of chocolate on it.
Sprinkle with the red heart sprinkles and place in the fridge for about 5-10 minutes or until the chocolate has hardened. Break up the popcorn, serve, and enjoy!
Hint: Don’t have a piping bag on hand? You can use a storage bag with the corner cut off.
Substitutions
Don’t have everything you need on hand to make this recipe? Here are some of my favorite tried and true.
- Red candy hearts – instead of using red candy hearts, you can use any type of red sprinkles.
- Green candy melts – if for some reason you can’t find green candy melts, you can always use green food coloring with white chocolate.
- Coconut oil- you can use whatever oil you have on hand! Coconut oil is just the easiest to work with when it comes to adding melting the green candy melts.
The Grinch Popcorn is easy to make. However, you can use these substitutions to make it even easier. Sometimes it’s best to use whatever you have on hand!
Variations
Do you want to change up this recipe and make it your own? Here are some ways that you can do that!
- M&Ms – you can add a little more chocolate to this popcorn by sprinkling in M&Ms. Stick to using green and red, so you can keep it Grinch themed.
- Red popcorn – you can use red candy melts to change up the popcorn a little!
- Kid-friendly – let your kids add whatever they want to the popcorn. They’ll have so much fun with this!
Make this Grinch Punch to go along with the popcorn! The kids will LOVE the idea of a Grinch-themed holiday party with green goodies.
Equipment
You only need a few pieces of equipment to help you make this recipe. Gather the items that you need you will be blown away by how tasty this recipe is.
- Frosting Bag
- Scissors
- Baking Sheet
- Parchment Paper
Storage
The exciting news about this Grinch Popcorn is that you can make it in advance. After you have made it and the chocolate has cooled off, you can add it to Ziploc baggies. Plop those baggies in the freezer and take them out when you’re ready to eat them!
You can leave this popcorn out at room temperature as long as it is an airtight container.
Tips
- Drizzle your completed popcorn with chocolate. This will take the popcorn to a whole new level and make it even more dessert-like.
- Add even any type of candy or nuts that your family enjoys for an extra kick.
- Get festive with holiday sprinkles or heart-shaped candies!
- It’s best if the popcorn is spread out in one layer, with no spaces between the popcorn. This allows you to get chocolate on every piece without wasting chocolate.
- You can leave your popcorn out of the fridge to dry, if desired, it will just take a while longer to set, unless it’s in a cool, dry area.
- If you want to skip the frosting bag, you can use a spoon to drizzle the chocolate instead. It takes longer and doesn’t look as uniform, but it does the trick.
- If your chocolate seems overly thick, add a bit more coconut oil to make it easier to use and work with.
- I used movie theater butter popcorn and it was the perfect mixture of salty-sweet. However, you can use any type of popcorn you desire, including homemade!
FAQ
Do you have questions about this recipe? Here are the answers to the most commonly asked questions.
The issue with putting popped popcorn in the fridge is that the texture will taste weird after a while. But just for a few minutes to get your candy melts hardened won’t change the texture.
As long as you store the popcorn in an airtight container, it will last for around 1-2 weeks!
If you have discovered that your popcorn has gotten a little stale, you can lay it on a cookie sheet and put it in the oven. Head your oven to 250 degrees and let the popcorn bake for about 5 minutes!
You can use either one. I like to use buttered for that salty-sweet taste.
