How to Make Tie Dye Cupcakes

These homemade tie dye cupcakes come together in just 9 easy steps. So, easy even, the kids can help make these tasty Halloween cupcakes.

Step 1: Preheat the oven and prepare your muffin tin.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Then, line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.

Step 2: Mix your cupcake batter

Add cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs to a large bowl and beat on medium for 2 minutes.

Step 3: Color your black batter

Divide the cake batter between two smaller bowls. Add black food coloring to one bowl and store well, until the color is consistent. To get this color dark, I used about 20 black coloring drops.

Step 4: Color your orange batter

Add red and yellow food coloring to one bowl and stir well, until the color is consistent, and as dark as you want. I used 20 drops of red and 12 drops of yellow.

Step 5: Fill your cupcake liner

Use a spoon to drop a small spoonful of orange batter into each cupcake liner. Next, use a spoon to drop a small spoonful of black batter into each cupcake liner.  Alternate between the two colors until you have filled each cupcake liner halfway, and you have run out of cake batter.

Step 6: Bake the cupcakes

Lightly tap the pan down on the counter to even the batter out, and place the pans in the oven. Bake for 12-17 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes clean.

Step 7: Cool the cupcakes

When cupcakes are done, set the pan on a cooling rack for 5 minutes, then remove cupcakes from the pan to cool completely.

Step 8: Make the orange frosting

Now it’s time to color your frosting orange. I used 12 drops of red and 8 drops of yellow.

Step 9: Frosting the cupcakes

Set a piping bag or ziploc bag up with a frosting tip (if desired), and set it in a large cup to fill with frosting. Frost cupcakes, and add sprinkles.

Variations

Pumpkin Pie Spice: Add in two teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice to your cupcake batter if you want some pumpkin flavor.

Food Coloring: Change up the colors of your food coloring, to make your holiday.
