When my daughter was little she struggled with eating breakfast in the mornings. She is not a morning person by any means. I quickly learned that if I wanted to get something in her stomach before she went off to school, I needed to make breakfast fun and festive to get her excited about eating it. That’s where these Air Fryer Unicorn Pop Tarts come in. She loves all things unicorn related and a pop tart is just delicious so when you mix the two together you have a breakfast even the pickiest eater won’t turn down.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Unicorn Pop Tarts

Can I bake these instead of using the Air Fryer

Yes, you can bake these Unicorn Pop Tarts instead of air frying if you do not have an air fryer on hand. To bake in the oven instead of air frying set your oven temperature to 400 degrees and bake for about 10 minutes or until golden brown. I would start checking for doneness at around 7 minutes and watch carefully to prevent burning.

If you are baking them in the oven don’t forget to spray your baking pan with non sticking cooking or baking spray. If you prefer not to use baking spray you could also bake your Unicorn pop tarts on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

How Do You Store and Reheat These Air Fryer Unicorn Pop Tarts For Later?

Store all leftover poptarts in your fridge for up to seven days.  Be sure to keep your pop tarts in an airtight container or storage bag to keep them fresh for the entire seven days.  You may also freezer your pop tarts in a freezer bag and allow to thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

To reheat your Unicorn Pop Tarts simply place them back in the air fryer at 370 degrees for about 3 minutes.  Reheating them in the air fryer will allow them to become warm and crispy again.   You can also reheat them in the oven at 400 degrees for about 4 to 5 minutes.

How To Make

Step 1. If using homemade dough, add in blue food coloring until your desired blue color (I opted for more of a teal color) after adding in your ice water. If using store bought, roll your dough into a ball. Add your blue food coloring until your desired blue color. Knead with your hands or a stand mixer until fully incorporated.

Step 2. Lay your pie crust out flat on a lightly floured surface. With your cookie cutter cut out as many heart shaped hearts you can with the amount of pie crust you have.

Step 3. On one of the heart-shaped crust, take 1 tablespoon of your jelly preserves, and place it in the middle. Spread it out evenly on the heart shape. Make sure to leave room around the edges.

Step 4. Taking your finger, dip it in the egg wash, and evenly spread the egg wash around the edges surrounding the jelly.

Step 5. Place another heart shaped pie crust on top of the other heart with the jelly on it. Using a fork press down the edges creating a seal.

Step 6. Using a kitchen brush, dip it in the egg wash and top the rest of your heart shape with the egg wash.

Step 7. Using a fork, or toothpick, poke about 6 to 8 holes in the top of your top layer pastry.

How To Air Fry your Unicorn Pop Tarts

Step 8. Depending on the size of your air fryer, place as many pastry hearts in your air fryer that will fit without interfering with the shape of the pastry.

Step 9. Cook your pop tart at 370° for 7 minutes. Once the timer is done, open your air fryer, and flip your pop tarts. Continue to cook at 370° for an additional 3 to 4 minutes, or until it is reached a soft brown color.

Step 10. Remove from the air fryer, and transfer to a cooling rack.

Step 11. While your pastries are cooling, mix together your powdered sugar, milk, and pink food coloring (you can add more or less depending on the color of food coloring you prefer). You can choose to add more powdered sugar if you like your icing thicker, or more milk if you like your icing thinner.

I typically serve my air fryer pop tarts with a side of fruit salad. If I want to up the protein I will add in a scrambled egg or piece of bacon or sausage to go along with the pop tarts. We eat these pop tarts for breakfast and snacks around our house so it depends on when we are eating to how I serve them.
