Equipment

  • Heatproof measuring cup or bowl
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • spoon
  • Fine mesh strainer (if using loose butterfly pea flowers)
  • 2 serving glasses

Ingredients

  • 1 cup store-bought lemonade
  • 1 teaspoon dried butterfly pea flowers or 2 butterfly pea flower tea bags
  • 1 cup hot boiling water
  • Ice cubes as needed
  • Lemon slices for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Place the dried butterfly pea flowers or tea bags into a heatproof container. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over them and steep for 5 minutes, or until the water turns a deep blue color.
A glass teapot filled with dark blue liquid sits on a marble surface beside a small bowl of dried butterfly pea flowers.
  • Remove the tea bags or strain out the flowers. Allow the tea to cool to room temperature.
  • Fill two serving glasses with ice cubes.
Two round glasses filled with clear liquid and ice cubes on a light marble surface, viewed from above.
  • Pour 1/2 cup of lemonade into each glass.
  • Slowly pour the cooled butterfly pea tea over the lemonade in each glass. Watch as the blue tea changes to beautiful shades of purple where it meets the lemonade.
A hand pours blue liquid from a teapot into a glass of iced lemonade, causing the drink to change color; lemon slices and scattered petals are on the table.
  • Garnish and Serve: Garnish with fresh lemon slices, if desired. Stir gently before drinking and enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Serve immediately. The layered appearance is most dramatic right after pouring.
  • Let the tea cool first. Cool tea creates better layers and keeps the drink refreshing.
  • Pour slowly. Pour the tea gently over the back of a spoon for the prettiest layered effect.
