Equipment

  • large pot
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Pitcher

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried hibiscus petals sorrel
  • 8 cups water
  • 2-3 slices fresh ginger
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 orange sliced (optional)
  • ¾ cup brown sugar adjust to taste
  • Ice for serving

Instructions

  • Rinse the dried hibiscus petals under cool water to remove any dust.
  • Bring the water to a boil in a large pot. Add the hibiscus petals, ginger, cloves, cinnamon stick, and orange slices if using. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.
A black pot with wooden handles contains dark liquid with hibiscus flowers. Beside the pot, a plate holds orange slices, ginger, and a cinnamon stick.
  • Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the brown sugar until it dissolves completely. Let the mixture cool to room temperature so the flavors deepen.
  • Strain the cooled tea through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher, removing the hibiscus petals, spices, and ginger.
A metal strainer with hibiscus petals and orange slices rests over a bowl, filtering dark red liquid.
  • Refrigerate the strained tea for at least 2 hours, or until fully chilled. Serve over ice with an orange slice or mint sprig if desired.
