Close up of Instant Pot Salisbury Steak

I’m an old fashioned girl.  I love old fashioned recipes. However, I also like to save as much time in the kitchen as possible. So, I spend time trying to remake the recipes that I loved when my grandmother made them into more time saving and easier methods without losing the flavor.

This pressure cooker Salisbury steak is no different.  One of my top favorite meals that my grandmother made was Salisbury steak.  What can I say, I’ve always been a beef kind of girl.  So, this past month I recreated this recipe using my Instant Pot trying to save on time and dishes.  It turned out so delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions About Instant Pot Salisbury Steak

Can I use something other than cube steak?

Certainly!  You can use burger patties if you want.  When I am using burger patties I like to mix them up like meatloaf with an egg, seasoned breadcrumbs and onions. I just used cube steak for this recipe to keep it simple.  However you can use anything that your family prefers.

Can I leave out the mushrooms?

Yes! If your family doesn’t like mushrooms you are welcome to leave them out of this recipe.  You can even use canned mushrooms instead of fresh if you prefer also.  If you are using canned mushrooms you will need to drain them first otherwise your sauce will be too thin.

How can I thicken the sauce?

You can thicken your sauce if you want a thicker gravy in two ways.  You can add a cornstarch slurry.  A cornstarch slurry is about ¼ cup of water mixed with one or two tablespoons of cornstarch depending on how thick you want your gravy.   Once you have mixed up your cornstarch slurry place your pot on saute mode and then stir in the slurry. Allow your pot to heat until your gravy starts to thicken.

The second method that you can use is to remove your steaks from your pot and then place your pot on saute mode.  Allow your sauce to thicken naturally while it cooks for a few minutes.

Can I freeze Instant Pot Salisbury Steak?

Yes! This Instant Pot recipe freezes beautifully.  The best thing about this recipe is that it can be frozen raw and then just dumped into your Instant Pot when you are ready to cook it.  If you forget to thaw your frozen salisbury steak you will need to add about three minutes to your pressure cooking time to make sure your steaks get all the way done in the center.

How long can I store Salisbury Steak?

Salisbury steak can be stored in a sealed and airtight container in the freezer for up to three months.  Or in an airtight container in the fridge for about 3 days.
