Ingredients
This is a quick overview of the ingredients that you will need to make this recipe. You can find the full list in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- chocolate frosting
- semi-sweet chocolate chips
- unsalted butter
- vanilla extract
- salt
- chopped nuts, optional
Instructions
This is a quick overview of the instructions to make this recipe. You can find the full steps in the recipe card.
Line your pan with parchment paper or foil. Then set aside.
In a medium saucepan, you will heat on low and add your butter and chocolate chips. Stir often until the chocolate is melted and has a creamy texture.
Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the can of frosting, a pinch of salt, and vanilla.
If you want add your chopped nuts to the chocolate mixture. Just fold them in with a spatula.
Pour the fudge into the pan and then spread evenly. Allow the fudge to set up.
Slice and serve the fudge!
Hint: When lining the pan make sure to cover the edges of the pan. That way you can easily lift the fudge out of the pan once it is set up. This is going to allow you to create those nice clean lines when you go to slice the fudge.
Variations
I wanted to share a handful of ways you can change up this chocolate fudge recipe! This is a great recipe that is easy to add in other simple ingredients to create different flavors of this easy fudge.
- Fudge Flavor: You can use white chocolate chips for the melted chocolate and vanilla frosting to make a white chocolate fudge. Or play around with the types of frosting to create different flavors. Even a chocolate buttercream frosting would be phenomenal.
- Mix-Ins: Crushed cookies, dried fruit, chopped dark chocolate pieces, M&M candies, chopped candy, or other items are some of our favorite ways to dress up the decadent fudge!
- Swirl Fudge: Drizzle in some caramel sauce or even hot fudge, and swirl it into the fudge once you have the fudge mixture in the pan. It will create a nice swirl effect to the top of the fudge.

Equipment
So I made this fudge on the stovetop. You will want to use a saucepan, and if you want to go a step further you can use a candy thermometer, but I find it is not needed. Or you can do a microwave-safe bowl and heat and make this fudge in the microwave for a quicker prep for this easy fudge recipe.
You will also want a square baking pan, so you can pour the fudge in it.
Storage
Store the fudge in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. I find if you store at room temperature the fudge dries out quicker.
You can also freeze any of the fudge you want to save for later. Just place it in a freezer bag or freezer container. Freeze for 3-4 months. Then eat frozen or thaw in the fridge overnight.
Wendy’s Test Kitchen Tips
- Quality chocolate is key, as it is going to ensure you get the best flavor of the fudge.
- The salt is going to enhance the flavor of the chocolate fudge icing recipe. Without the salt it won’t be as vibrant in flavor.
- Make sure that your pan is prepped and ready as the fudge will set up pretty quickly.
- Allow the fudge to chill for the right amount of time so it sets up fully. If you try to slice and eat it before it sets up, the creamy consistency will be too soft and not hold its shape.
- Ensure you are stirring the fudge mixture in the saucepan often. If you do not stir it will burn on the bottom of the pan and ruin the mixture.
FAQs
Go right ahead and make a homemade chocolate frosting that you mix in. That is completely fine if you want a full on homemade fudge.
Yes, you can double by using a 9×13 pan. Or half the recipe and use a loaf pan for fudge. Just make sure to measure the ingredients properly once you convert the recipe.
If your fudge has grit to it, that could be because you didn’t cook it long enough. You want to cook low and slow, to help break down the sugar in the ingredients. This is going to help remove the grainy or gritty texture.
